How much closer are we to a16z Bio + Health’s “biggest company in the world”?

In November 2022, a16z declared that the biggest company in the world will be “a consumer-obsessed, healthcare-native tech company that reimagines what care can look like”. Whether it comes in the form of a “payvidor” that patients love or a one-stop shop that serves the whole ecosystem, consumer delight is at the forefront.

Enter the AI wave. This near-commoditization of tech solutions is accelerating the vision of bringing consumer-grade experiences to healthcare. a16z’s portfolio reflects this focus, and makes a tech-native healthcare company more feasible.

Point solutions like Turquoise Health (contract transparency), Ambience Healthcare (ambient scribe), Zus Health (data interop) will allow providers, both incumbent payvidors and emerging players, to deliver patient-preferred experiences.

The question now is: how quickly can existing vertical payvidors integrate AI solutions in a way that feels seamless for consumers, or will a new tech-first player capitalize on the readily-available solutions and demonstrate real health outcomes from day 1?
