I don’t mind if candidates use AI in an interview; it’s available to use on the job anyway. However I think that folks should disclose upfront that they are using an AI assistant and they should receive a different interview process.
Traditional interviews are designed around questions that act as proxies for critical thinking and collaboration. These questions have “answers” that are typically only arrived at via the aforementioned principles. Introducing a tool that short-circuits to the answer is a jarring experience to an interviewer who has seen tens if not hundreds of human reasoning examples. They can likely intuit that something is off.
The main thing that irks me about these AI interview assistants right now is simply the element of deception. I think in the short term, the candidate experience is generally worse because interviewers are re-calibrating, when before, they were fully focused on helping the candidate succeed. Over time, I think we will all develop a new interview process that welcomes AI as a neutral third party.
